I have had a hard time wrapping my head around the whole planting season here in Phoenix, which is mildly problematic because I have really been bitten by the garden bug. We’re preparing our soil for the new year planting (see, it’s confusing here, no?) and at FHE tonight we planted our seeds in cups for transplanting next month.
I made a whole little PDF about when to plant here from some various info on the internet. I thought I’d share it, in case it’s helpful to anyone else. A lot of things have 2 planting seasons here, so seeing it all together kind of helped. And heavens knows I love a good chart.
You can also see how I made a square foot garden on the cheap here. A great idea for the Southwest!

That’s cool! I look at a similar one the SC County Master Gardeners made.

Hi! Thanks for this! What do the colors stand for?
Hilary says
Sonda, I tried to correlate them to the planting season… so I’d know to pull those seeds at the beginning of that timeframe. 🙂

Thank you! This is so helpful! I have also been bitten by the gardening bug and it is so confusing in Arizona! I went to my local nursery (whitfill nursery) and they were super helpful too!

McKenzie I use A&P nursery here in Phoenix, they have always been super helpful!

Thank you for making and posting this chart. I just moved to southern Arizona from the Pacific NW and I am so confused about when to plant what here!
Hilary says
It is pretty confusing!

Where in Arizona are you? I’m pretty certain that a lot depends on WHERE in Arizona you actually are, as (pretty) I’m sure you know different parts of Arizona have very different weather. It would be very helpful to know whether or not I can actually apply this beautiful chart of yours to my area (Apache Junction). Many thanks if you would be so kind!
Hilary says
So true! I really need to fix it — we live in the Pheonix area!
Emma says
Thank you so very much! Based on your location, I should be able to use your chart exaclty as is for my own garden! 🙂
Hilary says
I hope it works!

Sad in AZ says
Help, help, help. I moved to Arizona nearly 3 years ago. I can’t seem to get my garden going due to flippen bunnies and ground squirrels. They eat everything. I was able to grow cantaloupe from seeds last year into beautiful adult plants with flowers. Came out one morning to everything gone to the nub. Tears, tears, and more tears. I have tried everything. Otc repellents of every kind, fences, covers, I even bought a cat. Nothing works.
Hilary Erickson says
Oh man, I have no idea….. that is sad though.

I just started my container garden with three tomato plants one that is Solar fire-heat tolerant and the other two cherry tomatoes I know it’s late but I didn’t find this site until now I want to build a vertical garden on my patio both with vegetables and flowers and maybe a potted tree
Hilary Erickson says
I hope they’re doing well!

This is great, Hilary! So simple. For anyone who has moved to Phoenix from elsewhere, it is so important to discover when we plant various varieties as our climate is so different from most other places. Way to go!

Did you compile this or did you download from another source? If so, what was the source?
Thanks.

You know, I think i used a university guide along with info from seed packets and talking to my local nursery. I made this a long time ago so it’s a bit fuzzy…
Bridget Fast says
Does that mean start seeds indoors? Or plant seeds outside?
Hilary Erickson says
Either one, I’d watch the weather if it seems super hot or cold I’d start inside.

I’m in the town of Maricopa, I believe it’s the same planting region for the valley. I just planted my seeds in cups. I bring them out in the day and take them in at night. 80 degrees in Jan/Feb is sure going to throw a wrench in gardening this year, I think. I didn’t have a whole lot of luck with buying plants last year, so this year I’m going all in ….and planted seeds. The weather here is mostly extreme and I have yet to perfect my garden. I’m using various sources to identify when to plant, yours seems to be a tad later then ones I was finding. I’m really at a loss at what and when, but this winter is spring like weather so I just decided to use my resources and wing it…here’s to hoping we all have a harvest season here in AZ! Any other tips/tricks or ideas you have, please share! Thank you for the information.
Hilary Erickson says
Interesting…. I hope your garden goes well for you!

What do the colors mean????
Hilary Erickson says

As another poster mentioned different parts probably different planting schedules. But how different? I am coming from the north east, VERY DIFFERENT LOL. and finding information for Arizona is difficult as most think it’s impossible. This post was a blessing! Would it only differ depending on high desert or low desert? Say Scottsdale? I look forward to more of your posts!
