I wanted adorable raised beds that would container my every cherished hope for my garden.
But they were about 80 bucks/piece. We had just moved and graduate school was staring down our bank accounts. Plus, a lot of them are made with treated wood and that didn’t really fit in with my organic vision {and it’s mainly a vision, I have used pesticides a few times, sue me}.
I knew there had to be another option.
We had a fairly large area for a garden. I had gardened in CA and I wanted to do it here too.
{in walks the internet}. I spent a lot of time looking at Garden plans. I knew I didn’t want walkways made with burlap and straw. We get crazy winds here. I walked the isles of Home Depot, and it hit me.
Big Pavers.
So, I measured out 4 foot strips of “garden” and I got the largest pavers I could find at Home Depot. I laid those down using the black cloth underneath it (to prevent weeds coming through).
And here’s a few pictures of how it turned out. I do wish my pavers were 24″ instead of 18″, but the budget called for 18″ — plus I couldn’t find 24″ ones. I’m also not sure I could have wielded them myself.
I then scraped off the top layer and added my own Mel’s Mix on the top of each strip of garden.
Now, each year I cover the top with compost, and I dig it in in the areas that I am planting in. We are going into year three with this garden and it has worked out really well.

Where were you when I was induced!? 🙂 Sure could have used #6 then… I wasn’t warned that I couldn’t eat, and the previous weeks on bedrest, the nurses encouraged me to eat whenever I felt likeit. I was quite unimpressed with the jello and tea they offered! 🙂

I had One Guard home warranties all of last year and they covered all kinds of stuff that was in need of repair or replacing in a house we had just purchased. It was paid for by the seller so I figured what the heck lets try it. I like all of you had warranty companies that were horrible. I had American Home Shield for 8 years and they were a nightmare. They never covered a single claim and I had completely sworn off warranty companies until One Guard. However I just learned that One Guard has changed their coverage area so I don’t get to keep them. What a shame as I really loved their warranty program.

Huh, interesting. I know a lot of people who love them. I’m just not one of them. 🙂 BUT, if we bought or sold a house again, I would probably do it. It is nice to have a little piece of mind (or give the buyer some piece of mind).
