I have never really been into clothes. Yes, I like to look nice, but I also need to just get dressed and move on with my life. I feel VERY unproductive when I spend a long time figuring out what to wear (which is why my shirt filing and rotation works so well for me). BUT, I would like to feel better in the clothes that I have and feel better about myself.

My friend Lara mentioned Dressing Your Truth ® to me quite a while ago. It has worked REALLY well for her (and I think she always looks great). I have seen how the whole system has sort of grounded her and her style choices. It’s been really interesting to me. If you’re not interested in the whole course, but might be interested in her free”energy” profiling you can click here.

For Mother’s day, I asked for their course, and my husband was more than happy to oblige.
I had actually gone through the course to figure out my type about a year ago, maybe? I was torn between many types. I feel a draw toward Type 4℠, and I REALLY like being the life of the party which drew me somewhat to Type 1. But after stepping back and really looking at myself and all the descriptors, I realized I am a Type 3. I would say that I’m a Type 3, with some four, a little one and a tiny bit of 2 (because everyone has a little bit of all the types in them).
Have you taken the course? Do you think I’m a Type 3? Well, I’m pretty darn sure I am.
I have just started the course, and I am thrown off by a lot of things. First off — my wardrobe is all over the place, I really like variety, and my wardrobe represents that. Here’s a few things that I don’t like about what they’ve told me I should be wearing:
1) Animal prints. Seriously? SO not me. I kind of get sick when I see people in large amounts of animal prints, but I’m going to try it out. Maybe I’ll like it.
2) Prints on jeans. Seriously? I had always thought that having prints or any extra texture down there would just draw the eye to my poor spots. Again, maybe I’ll try it. Maybe….
3) Chunky necklaces. That part makes me REALLY nervous. I’m mulling over a trip to charming charlie’s where I consider my options. Do you guys like chunky necklaces? Yikes!
4) Scarves. I don’t own a single scarf. There, I said it. Judge me all you want.
5) Belts make me nervous. Do they make you nervous? I don’t own a single large belt, but I am committed to obtaining one. 🙂
6) Pointed shoes only. Haha, I had a nice laugh about that one. That won’t be happening. I’ll try to find some “swift lines” and maybe not wear black but pointed shoes seem unlikely…
7) I have zero desire to look “hot”— they keep referencing that. I just try not to hurt people’s eyes when they look at me. 🙂 I guess I just like feeling confident in my clothes. Hopefully that is my own “hot”
Some things I do like about it:
1) I actually REALLY like the color palate, and that rang true. I REALLY like the shade “peacock”, and rust. I’ve never liked black much. I do tend to veer towards browns.
2) Gold. I have a LOT of silver, but lately have been veering more towards gold. I am excited to try more gold.
3) I like v-necks, I always have — and they mention type 3 is big on v-necks. Who knew?
4) Haha, big watches. I’ve always loved big watches, who knew?
5) I have always liked angular glasses for myself. So that has always been with me…
6) Love how they encourage curly girls to stay curly. 🙂 Turns out, I won’t be straightening.
Anyway, it’s interesting to see what I have gravitated to already, and things that are new. It is going to be an adventure!

Next Saturday is sale day at Goodwill, which is pretty well the only way I’ll make this transition. I’ll be there trying to find my dynamic clothes.
ETA: I had this whole post written, and a plan of how to attack my wardrobe, in my true type 3 style. Then, I went into my closet and realized I have almost ZERO type 3 clothes. I also realized our financial situation (while completely fine right NOW) is tenuous, plus I’m not sure where we’re going to live or what type of clothes I will want there…. I’ve decided to give myself 50 bucks to spend at Goodwill this weekend, and DYT will be how I buy going forward. It has given me permission to throw some things away I have never really thought I looked all that good in. But, I’m not going to be able to fund a whole new wardrobe at this point. I’m gonna take it slow. I’m interested to know what others did?

I think knowing what we look good in and dressing in things that fit are the key to feeling good about ourselves, and it sounds like you’re on the right track.
I love big necklaces – but I have to be careful – too big makes me uncomfortable
I love v necks. Scoop necks too. I don’t like anything too close to my neck.
Scarves and belts and pointy shoes are all in my wardrobe and i love them.
You have a lot of sensible shoes – I’d love to see you in something sleek and happy.
Everything else sounds spot on. I’m excited for you!.

Yeah, we’ll see. I’ll thrift this weekend, I hope to do a post on what I bought. No grey, no black, no navy. I’m kind of screwed. At least I still have “rust” 🙂

I did the email course probably two years ago. I have no idea what type I am off the top of my head. I thought it was all very interesting though, and had a friend who was into it. I am just so not into fashion or clothes, that I don’t know why I would do this. Maybe someday I’ll change my mind.
Hilary says
Katelyn, I think it’s hard to be on top of fashion with little kids at home. I always feel better when I “FEEL” better inside though. It probably makes me a better mom on those days (but it’s effort — and sometimes I just don’t have the effort).
Hilary says
I’m totally not into fashion either, but it has pulled me out of a slump. 🙂 I mostly like what I’m noticing about myself now that the gashion is “under control. ” 🙂
Reelika @Financially Wise On Heels says
I could honestly shop until I drop 🙂 I just love clothes and everything else, but I always try to find the best deals and make everything fit together. And I am a huge fan of scarves, just because they can add so much more color and change your entire look with little effort and few bucks!
Hilary says
Reelika, that is SUCH A gift (obviously, one I don’t have). I will need to try a scarf at some point. I mostly hate stuff around my neck… maybe I’d like it — who knows! 🙂

I’ve been hearing a lot about ‘dress your truth’ and enjoyed your take on it! I’m certainly intrigued by the course but won’t be spending the moolah to take it. At least not yet … choices;0)
Hilary says
Jayleen, I certainly agree. It took me almost 3 years. I just am NOT good at clothing choices. Not a natural thing for me. 🙂 You can take the energy type thing for free though!

I’m still not sure I understand this whole course – even after poking about the website. Why can we not just wear what we enjoy? My closet is full of things I’ve seen in a store, said “oh I need” and now I never have nothing to wear (except when it comes to be close to laundry day!). Maybe I’m just not picky *shrug*
Scarves though…scarves are weird. They look great on everyone I have ever seen wear one. I’ve tried it, and it just does not feel right, nor can I get it to lay right, and its just exasperating xD
Hilary says
Havok, you can TOTALLY wear what you enjoy. For me, I just don’t look my best in the clothes I pick out. I think. I TOTALLY get you on scarves though!

Just 4 types to describe what makes you look your best??? Does not sound convincing at all! There are after all several independent factors:
– the shape of your face – especially whether your traits are round or angular (but for hats and glasses you need to think deeper than just rounded/angular)
– the proportions of your body – you can count at least 3 different types here, and then make round/angular versions of each, depending on the previous trait
These 2 criteria tell what kind of forms flatter you most, and they already make 6 combinations… Then comes
– your natural colours – cold vs warm, and bright vs muted (it’s not that on-off, though). There’s a flattering red (or several, actually) and blue tone for everyone, but only about ½ the people have a flattering yellow. Also not everybody looks good in black (which I refuse to wear black other than in a funeral!)
And THEN add your personality! You personality tells nothing about whether you look better in silver or gold, with pointed or round shoes, with chunky or small necklaces, or which cuts flatter your body most. But even with all those criteria there’s plenty of chooses to make. For example, I would never choose printed jeans, but I did have embroidered ones (and I’ve been missing them ever since they got too worn out). And with personal colour palette it is possible to choose very subtle colours, or literally dress as a rainbow. I personally fluctuate between dressing like an exclamation mark and blending into the background, depending on my mood & situation. Sometimes I even choose colours based on the impression I want to make – there is research to back this.
I once paid for a good colour test with a personal colour palette, and I think it paid itself back within a year. For the other 2 factors a smaller, cheaper version that the stylist offered would have sufficed more than well, but I like having a thorough information pack. (The thorough versions were both from an international company, but I’ve forgotten which one.)
Milja says
I’ve also learned that apart from black people tend to naturally like at least some of their flattering colours, but might not have found all their best colours. I myself got not one colour which made me think “you really think I should wear this???” – I had at least partly learned to steer away from those already. However, I DID get quite a few tones I had never really even tried. After having zero blue clothes for a decade (not even jeans) my wardrobe suddenly bursted with lovely blue clothes.
I also think it is likely that those things you list you like are things you intuitively know that look good on you. But the same does not necessarily apply to those things you don’t like. It may be that they don’t look good on you, or don’t suit your personality -. or then you just haven’t come across (or tried) a good way to implement it. For example, I know that a right kind of gathering looks gorgeous on me, but with e.g. too thick fabric it makes me look 10kg fatter!
Hilary says
Well, I’m off to do some thrifting following the system. We’ll see how it goes! 🙂

So I am not familiar with this course but I am intrigued to the point that I’ll probably buy the book. Needless to say in a huge clothes horse and even though I now have a child at home I still love to shop. That being said I have a background in fashion and also work in an office so cute clothes are a priority for me. I don’t get some of these rules though. Some of those items don’t work for certain body types. For example pointy shoes only? Chunky jewelry? Maybe I’ll get it more after reading into this concept further.
I did want to mention that if you are going to try something with your fashion choices start small. For example, for animal print try a shoe, belt, or even headband. I live the leopard print because it seems to go with everything. As for pointy shoes go with a neutral color like brown, black or navy. And the chunky necklace, if it’s not something you are used to also try a neutral color or something in your favorite color. Oh and if you aren’t sure of scarves I like to wear them long. And if you dont want to spend a lot of money Walmart actually has a great selection. They sell infinity scarves in sets of 2 for $5. So you can get 3 sets for the price of one at a department store and 5 sets for the price of 1 at a higher end store.
Good luck with your shopping!

I think the idea is to have “more substantial” jewlery. I have an instagram shot from the weekend, and the necklace is more substantial than my regular — but probably “normal” for most people. 🙂 Check out my instagram shot and tell me what you think! I should try a scarf, I’m not sure I’m ready for it. 🙂 https://instagram.com/p/2zRfYlTE6S/?taken-by=pulling_curls
