Batman and Robin costumes! What a great pair for a father/son duo! We have used it a couple of times with great success.
First, the man in black,
Batman
This was the year that I bought a lot of stuff from a jersey company. For Batman I bought a long sleeved T-shirt (now that we live in AZ, I wish I had bought short).
I bought some black swim trunks, and some grey sweats. The swim trunks go over the sweats. Drew wasn’t up for a speedo over it. It’s a shame.
I made a belt out of yellow vinyl with a Batman applique as a belt buckle — also made out of vinyl.
Just Google Batman Logo and it’s easy to print one out and trace it onto vinyl to cut out. I also did a vinyl cut-out for the T-shirt, but if I had brain cells I would have just bought a Batman T-shirt. not sure why I didn’t.
Boot covers are a necessity, and I just use their shoes as a pattern and then extend the leg portion up as high as they’d like it. I close the back with velcro and I put strips of elastic on the underneath to keep it on (and even though the elastic is getting walked on, it seems to do alright — I do use heavy duty elastic).
I already had a cape from our Darth Vader days (coming soon). I’ll talk more about capes below.
His mask was a bit of an issue. I think I got a pattern online for an adult hood, and then I added some ears. Honestly, it doesn’t look all that great, and I wish I had just bought something. The back/top part is made from vinyl, and then the front piece (over his eyes) is made from a silk. I wish I’d just bought something, this one was harder than it looks.

Robin
I bought a red T-shirt, and shorts.
I bough a green long sleeved t-shirt and sweats. For Robin, I sewed the t-shirt and shorts/sweats all together so it’d be easier for them to put it on.
For Robin, I bought an “R” applique, glued it on a circle of vinyl, and then glued the vinyl to the shirt using fabric glue. His belt is the same as Batman’s (2 strips of vinyl sewn together). I hand-cut an R and put it on a black oval.
The cape is the hardest part… and the sad news is, I can sew a cape without a pattern at this point. I made a collar type thing (because Robin has a shirt-color attached to his cape). I seriously did that without a pattern, and I was SO impressed with how it turned out. For his cape, I used some stretchy yellow fabric — like what they make swimsuits out of, I think. It’s perfect. It doesn’t wrinkle and it flows well when it billows behind him. to the collar, Ijust gathered the width of the fabric (the more fabric, the more amazing billowing) and then sew it onto the collar. Then, just do a small hem around the edges. With that fabric, it doesn’t matter which side is showing. I always cloe my capes with a large hook and loop.
For the mask, I made it out of vinyl, I put some grommets on the edges, and added some elastic, to keep it on.
Boot covers were the same as Batman’s.
When El Presidante was Robin, I used black hair coloring to do his hair, but when Mr Middle was it — we didn’t need it. I am not sure how important it was anyway. But, kids love colored hairspray, right?
It really is a very fun father/sun duo and I am glad we did it (and then did it again, 4 years later).
