Have you ever wanted to filter your home’s internet, but wondered how you could find a free family internet filter?
We had used quite a number of Internet filters through the years. Often, from the recommendation of my Cousin Bryce. He’s a librarian, which makes him smart about everything.
We had used SafeEyes for a number of years. They were fairly descent for a couple years but I started to feel like I wasn’t getting my money’s worth. They had been bought by McAfee and we all know how that ends…
Anyway, my cousin told me about Open DNS.
It’s a filter that goes through your router to filter ALL the internet content that is coming of that router. That means, that even when Conner is on our wifi with his Kindle, he is still protected.
It wasn’t that difficult to install. We use the Family Shield, and it does just as good as my paid service, if not better and I REALLY like how it’s automatic to anything connecting to our wifi. It looks like it has a paid option that I may want to look into (we have had thre free option for about 4 years at this point).
The internet is everywhere, open DNS just made it a little safer {emphasis on “a little”, because the best internet filter is thing you have inside you to tell you that what you’re viewing is wrong — we call that the Holy Ghost around here}.
OpenDNS, helping the Holy Ghost since 2006.

This is exactly how we do it. We are pretty unsavvy with stuff like this, but our neighbor helped us set it up. You can also tell it when certain devices can or cannot access the wireless. Like, since we want Bria to go to sleep instead of messing around on her iPod, we cut off her wifi supply around 10 pm.

Lara, us that just with the free one? How can you cut them off? I need to figure that out!
Lara says
Yes. We definitely aren’t paying! But I don’t know how to do it. I just googled OpenDNS restrict by time just now, and there are lots of hits…

Ok, good info.

We just purchased a new LinkSys wireless router and it comes with all the family/parental control needs. very simple to set up and use.

Denise – I think we have those on our router also — just not sure how they work. 🙂 Open DNS will stay with us regardless of router brand.
