I pictured a “fun” parent as one who got down on the floor and played Polly Pockets or Legos.
Turns out, I’m not that mom. I can’t really engage with those toys on the level my kids do. I find it torturous — which, in fact, isn’t all that fun.
During my interview with Carol Tuttle from Dressing your Truth I confided in her that I am NOT a very fun mom. At least, I don’t see myself that way. I said “I don’t get down on the floor and play with my kids” — her response was
“Who’s idea is that? — that’s a fun parent?”
and I said… “umm…. Parent’s magazine?”
Because frankly, I have no idea where I got it into my head that is what a fun parent is? But I won’t deny that IS what I thought a fun parent was, and did.
It’s not fun to me.
But I AM a fun person.
I needed to figure out how to be a fun parent.
I do like to be crazy and silly, I think those things are fun.
I will sing like Ethyl Merman to any song you want to
I love to color (which comes in handy when you have a crafty gal).
And I will dance.
Shut up, and dance.
Let’s back it up a bit….
Circa 2009 I hosted a House Party that gave me a free Just Dance.
And it’s pretty much history. I’ve got tons of them, because
a) I love to dance
b) I am good at Just Dance.
My long history of of doing workout videos has made me a great candidate for following along a high impact game like Just Dance.
Which surprises people.
And I LOVE surprising people.
And I love dancing. And I need to learn how to smush the fun times in with my family. Just Dance is a way to quickly do 3 or 4 songs and have a GREAT time together before moving onto the next thing. Uptown funk seems to be the favorite right now!
Just Dance 2016 has great options for people of all ages – over 40 top hits! Lots of different types of music for everyone. It played very similar to the other year’s, but I love getting the new one and enjoying the new songs. Favorites included “All About That Bass” and “Uptown Funk”. Availble for all motion-control gaming platforms, including Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Wii.
No Maroon 5 though. {sad face}
There’s a lot of group dances that involve actually dancing together, which works less well for my kids who aren’t allowed to touch each other. Just kidding. But, those are harder for my kids, so I tend to pick ones that have a single dancer.
Everyone loves to do it, we all have fun and it can take as long as you have.
So, figure out what kind of a fun mom you are, and DO it. Have fun with your kids today. You know you want to. 🙂
Hold the phone, did you know there’s a new controller app for your phone? Available to use only with new-gen consoles, they’ll track your moves all on their own! Check them out:

Even as an adult, “playing” this kind of game with my mom was fun. Because now there’s two of you who look silly in the living room, not just you by yourself xD My mom is “unconventional” fun, as well. Which meant we “bonded” over things besides Polly Pocket…like crafty things or cooking and baking. Still was fun, still something I’m happy to share with her now. 🙂

I agree. I also love to cook with my kids, most of the time. 🙂
