Organizing can seem REALLY overwhelming. I know that feeling, I have 100% been there. So, how do you find the motivation to get going? Today I’m going to give you five easy motivators to get you organizing.
Before we get going, my 5-Word Organization Challenge really helps simplify organizing so you can get started!
Upcoming Event?
Ok, the one that works for a LOT of people is to set an upcoming event. Maybe it’s having guests in your home, or an upcoming party — but sometimes if you just create an event — even if it’s just game night with friends — MANY people find this to motivate them to get jobs done they’d normally procrastinate.
Or, if you’re my kids, we have rules about clean rooms and going to a friend’s house, so maybe you need to do the same for yourself. No Netflix until you’ve organized one area.
I will say this one often has the opposite effect of making you feel wildly overwhelmed — so I think you really need to know yourself before implementing this one. Sometimes the event AND my will to organize may send me into a personal breakdown — but maybe that’s just me.
The White Flag of Life
Sometimes my home seems to be closing in on me. I’m just losing a battle. I can’t find the spices I need, I can’t find my keys, I can’t put anything away so it’s just left in piles. My house is winning.
The problem is, my house can’t win. I am the one who owns it — LITERALLY. Well, me and the bank — but that’s a story for another day.
When you just feel like your house is winning it’s time to pivot that frustration to fixing it.
Now is not the time to wallow — you’re better than that. Now is the time to fix it. Giving up isn’t an option! Taking slow and simple steps is the answer (and yes, I’ve got a bunch of tips on that coming up!).
Here’s a great analogy for it — in my other life I’m The Pregnancy Nurse®. So often people are overwhelmed by pain for much of labor. BUT once their cervix disappears they can push. This allows them to pivot their pain to action and PUSH.
That isn’t to say that pushing is fun. It’s still frustrating, and tiring — but it’s action.
Now is your time to pivot and PUSH — just not a baby this time. I hope. 🙂 Although pregnant ladies really know how to nest — so if that’s you. Let’s do this!
Blinders
So, as you’re thinking Ok, let’s DO this — you may look around and realize this is a pretty big job.
And that’s OK — it IS a big job. Frankly, that’s why I like smaller houses…. hahhah
BUT now is the time to put on those blinders and just look at ONE area.
Maybe it’s just your dresses, or it’s the whole closet, but not your dresser.
How big the area is, is up to you.
One of my favorite things to do is to set a timer and just pull out things for like 2 minutes. Then, I sort through those things, clean the area and put what I want back in a good system. I think I can pull out things for 2 minutes — I can do anything for 2 minutes (besides burpees, I can’t do those)….
And frankly, in 2 minutes I could pull out all my dresses, and my cardigans. And that’s a really nice dent in my closet.
In under 30 minutes I could suddenly have a closet that isn’t overwhelming me. And I sure do like that feeling.
Timers can help us do a lot of good things.

Time is Money
This one gets me — mostly because budgeting money is something I get behind — but I’m not so good about my time.
But, when you think of time as a finite resource and you can either spend your next hour relaxing on the couch, OR take 30 minutes and make a substantial change in an area that is bothering you really helps your day function better.
It just seems like a no-brainer to pick a bit of effort and THEN some Netflix.
I am a BIG believer that it doesn’t need to be all or nothing — we can have “chill” time but also use a bit of time to get organized too!
Of course, sometimes we also spend our money on useless things because we can — and that’s OK too.
But I think most of us try to get the most out of money that we can, and when we view time the same way sometimes it helps me use it better.
Get a Buddy
Get an organizing buddy! I’ve heard of this one a lot but honestly, I never did it.
- I was embarrassed to tell people I needed a buddy
- It was tough to find a time to organize together because most of my friends were also busy moms.
BUT I have a solution for this. A digital solution.
The Organized Home can be that organizing buddy for you! In it you’ll find:
- Tips on decluttering specific areas around your home
