How to Organize Your Home on a Budget
Your home. It’s your mecca. I had always envisioned my home as a warm place to greet people. A place that would wrap the people I love in the warm feelings I have for my friends and family.
But, there’s crayons on the floor and schmutz on the couch. I see the flaws, instead of that warm feeling.
In taking a small period of time, you can really make a difference in a room in your house. We’re going to walk through the rooms of your home and give you some actionable items for you to work on. I am not a big believer that money organizes thing. It’s a lot about just getting the work done (and frankly, buying less).
Easy Home Organizing Ideas?
First off, you need to figure out who YOU are. What works for you?
You have certain organizing tendencies and plans. Some are stackers, some are sorters, some love binders, and some love loose papers. What are YOU? I talked a little bit about this in my post about overcoming organization weaknesses. I finally realized (after seeing my son with many of the same problems) that I needed to no consistently think I could do better. In some areas, I needed a new plan because I wasn’t getting a new me. 🙂
Cleaning and organizing your home
Personally, an organized space is my own mecca. I just love knowing where my stuff is at. BUT, if the area is visibly dirty or the visible use of the area is detracting, I find that to be a problem. Which is why I created a weekly cleaning schedule. It helps keep my mind ON organization (instead of cleaning) and the reality is that an organized home is most often a fairly clean home. Using this cleaning system makes it so I am not cleaning all day.
I made it all even easier by creating these super handy house cleaning lists. Whether you just want your kids to have a very clear picture of what you need done in order to call a room “clean”. Or, if you just want something to check off when the room seem insurmountable. Those are the printables for you!
Organization Checklists
If you get really overwhelmed — check out my cleaning/organization checklists — that goes room by room doing a quick tidy/cleaning so each room looks polished.
Ways to organize your Kitchen
Man, when the kitchen starts out looking fairly decent I just make dinner SO much easier. I’m so much more relaxed and able to engage with my kids while we prepare the meal. Now, I don’t think the kitchen needs to be spotless, but this kitchen cleaning plan sure helps. This post on how to clean the kitchen might give you a few ideas. I find the kitchen to be the most overwhelming place to walk into when it is a mess. Organizing in circles helps me a lot! We use magnetic hooks and recipe clips to get things off the counter. Love them!
And if food’s your issue, check out my downloadable pantry inventory.
How to organize your bathroom
Oh, the bathroom, with your weird j-pipe drain under the counter!? Am I the only one who looks at pedestal sinks in home TV shows and wonders — but WHERE are you going to put your tampons? My post all about how to organize bathroom is going to tackle some of those problems!
This post is going to show you how to clean your bathroom, and then it’s time to get into the dark and dirty secrets of bathroom organization. For me, a lot of my “closed door” organization includes using amazon boxes to organize. This other post on cleaning your bathroom has some other awesome tips!
How to organize your bedrooms
Your bedroom is meant to be a haven that provides you with amazing sleep. Am I right? Sometimes I just think mine is a haven for decorative pillows I thought were a good idea. A large part of the bedroom is keeping things put away – just like I talk about in my bedroom cleaning post.
However, having an organized bedroom is a MUST if you’re looking to get into your day smoothly. My post on how to organize your bedroom has some awesome tips and tricks to make all those bedroom musts a little easier!
My whole morning routine has gotten easier now that I do t-shirt filing. I’m just a t-shirt and jeans gal — and this has made it CRAZY easier!
Easy Organizing in the Garage
This one is tough because every garage and every family’s needs are different. This post about cleaning your garage is helpful. A lot of it is just not forgetting it’s there and then being ENTIRELY overwhelmed when you can’t jam any more stuff in it. This one about organizing your garage is pretty great too!
For us, we installed built-in shelves that have been really nice.
Organized Living Room
I have one room with new (at least, it was new when we bought it) furniture and matching stuff. I like to give the IDEA that I have “it” together — and my living room is where I put that act on. 🙂 That’s why being able to keep it clean and easy to organize is KEY to this facade. I wrote awhole post about how to organize your living room. Of course, the toughest part of the living room is that we LIVE in there.
Also, a key to the living room is have it very easily cleaned. Not a lot of surfaces and not buying dark wood furniture (like someone I know, named Hilary).
My ❤️ hotels for your 2024 trip:
– Best Western Park Place — it’s the CLOSEST hotel, has a breakfast and if it’s available for your dates, BOOK IT. If not, check out the Tropicana.
– Cambria – this is my favorite one with a great price point for larger groups – has a water park and free breakfast (not walkable though) – but if you want a walkable suite check out Castle Inn
The Organized Mom
Being a mom has so many facets and different timeframes on your motherhood journey lead to different needs. Like, back to school is something I totally didn’t think about for a long time. Now, back to school organization is a key point that I build much of my late summer around.
Paperwork is a HUGE part of a mom’s life. In this post about organizing paperwork, I talk about children’s homework, bills and more. It has TONS of great info for the organized mom!
I’ve started using a paper planner. I love the creativity along with being able to really look at the time I am given (same amount as you!) and decide what I really want to prioritize. Don’t worry — I still use my phone plenty to keep this family on task!
Organization even plays into my gift giving. Anymore, my focus on “less stuff” has changed what I’m giving my kids.
But, mostly, when I think about the organized mom — I think about her organized bag or purse. That post tells my favorite things I keep in every bag. I {heart} bags. I love my friend Lara’s post about her organized purse. 🙂
Pulling Curls is all about getting organized as a mom. Prioritizing stuff that is REALLY important and quickly doing the other stuff (like cleaning) so you can focus on the meat of the matter — my kids.
