Lung Cancer is the second most common cancer in the united states? It is also the #1 killer of all the cancers in the United States. These statistics really surprised me. With as much attention as is given to other types of cancer I figured they were more frequent and dangerous.
Did you know that even if you took just the non-smokers lung cancer out of the picture, it would still be in the top 10 fatal cancers in the United States?
Lung cancer is one of the most fatal cancers among men and women in the United States. Number one. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.
More than 430,000 people alive today have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some point. Each case of lung cancer is different as there are sub-types of lung cancer that are treated differently. It is important for those diagnosed with lung cancer to be tested for specific biomarkers in order to understand what type of cancer they have (I wrote a whole post about that here) — and make sure it is treated properly. In the future, we hope to treat lung cancer as more of a chronic disease with long life spans due to the new science and medical advances. What a blessing that would be!
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. It’s important for people to speak out, and listen. To raise awareness of new testing and treatment options, and show support for the thousands of patients who are fighting the disease not just in November, but in every month of the year. When lung cancer patients and those who care for them publicly share their stories and experiences, they help to put a human face on what this disease looks like. It also inspires others living with lung cancer to speak up and advocate for themselves
I know when our friend Roddy was diagnosed, he always said that he had been diagnosed with “nonsmokers lung cancer” to be clear that he got this as a young and vibrant man, who had never smoked. There is a stigma that comes with lung cancer. Which is unfortunate.
